AI-Powered Chatbots Support Mental Health in Chronic Illness
A randomized controlled trial published in JMIR mHealth and uHealth explored the use of AI-powered chatbots to support people living with chronic diseases who also faced depression and anxiety. Researchers noted that individuals with long-term physical health conditions are significantly more likely to experience mental health challenges than their peers.
In the study, participants who engaged with the chatbot completed structured exercises rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. Compared to a control group, these users experienced significant reductions in both depression and anxiety (P<.001). The tool offered adaptive, nonjudgmental guidance in a format accessible at any time.
These findings show how conversational AI can extend mental health support to populations often underserved in traditional care settings. For people managing chronic illness, chatbots may provide an immediate, evidence-based companion that eases emotional burden while complementing ongoing medical treatment.
